Alternative Fuels: Two For The Road

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

There's no arguing the fact that the gasoline-powered internal combustion engine has become significantly cleaner over the past decade or so.  Still, many experts believe its days are numbered.

Now, don't get us wrong.  It's not like gasoline engines will be going the way of the dinosaurs anytime soon.  Just the same, you don't exactly need a crystal ball to tell that the next few years will see carmakers introducing a number of new models designed to run on two much more environmentally-friendly alternative fuels.

With that in mind, we thought we'd provide a quick primer on some of the pros and cons of these new "green" powertrains so you can make informed decisions when it comes time to buy your next new vehicle:

DIESEL

Diesel fuel isn't just for trucks and busses anymore.  Here's how the new generation of so-called "clean diesel" passenger cars stack up against comparable gasoline-powered models:

  • 30 percent better fuel economy;
  • 20 percent reduction in CO2 emissions;
  • Noticeably better performance;
  • Diesel-electric hybrid prototypes return 70 miles-per-gallon;
  • Nitrous oxide (NOX) emissions, currently higher than gasoline engines, are expected to be significantly reduced within a few years.

ELECTRIC

While not many people realize it, electric cars once outsold gasoline-powered models.  Now they're poised to make a comeback.  Here's why:

  • Impressive acceleration on par with many high-priced sports cars;
  • Can be a true zero-emissions vehicle when recharged from green power sources like wind/solar;
  • Still significantly cleaner than gasoline-powered car even when recharged from traditional electric grid;
  • Filling up is as easy as plugging in your cell phone;
  • Fuel costs pennies per mile;
  • Many models have a limited range of around 100 miles on a single charge, though some can go 200-plus miles;
  • Battery cost will limit adoption in short term;
  • May qualify for $7,500 federal tax credit.
