Motoring Must-Haves

So maybe you're in the market for a new car.  You might even have narrowed it down to the particular model, trim level, and color you want.  But have you taken the time to figure out what options and accessories you might want to add?

Given the fact that we've driven 80-plus new models every year for the past decade or so, we have some carefully-considered opinions on what extra-cost extras are worth the money.  And which ones most folks could probably do just as well without.

So, without further preamble, here's our admittedly subjective list of comfort- and convenience-oriented bells-and-whistles we consider "must-haves" and "don't bothers":

Must-Haves

Heated Seats/Steering Wheel

Nothing eases the pain of getting into a car on a frigid morning more than being able to set the bun warmers on 'High.'  If you can, add a heated steering wheel and your frozen fingers will thank you.

Keyless Access/Start

Old-school keyless entry systems that make you actually push a button on the remote to unlock the doors and turn the key to start the engine actually seem annoying once you've used these new wireless key systems that allow you to get in and drive away with the remote tucked away safely in your pocket or purse.

Rearview Camera

While the big argument for these cameras that automatically switch on when you shift into Reverse is safety, they're also incredibly useful for maneuvering in tight quarters like curbside parking spots.  Look for systems with the largest display possible.

Driver's Seat Memory

Being able to store and recall your preferred settings for the driver's seat and outside mirrors takes a lot of the hassle out of sharing a car with a spouse or teen.  If the system also stores your other preferences like radio presets, well, so much the better.

Universal Garage Door Opener

Having a built-in garage door opener means you have one less thing rattling around the passenger cabin.  It also has security benefits, because bad guys can't just break into your car and use the hand-held opener to let themselves into your garage.

Satellite Radio

Whether you're stuck in traffic or on a long roadtrip, satellite radio is a godsend for people who spend a lot of time in their cars.  But you don't have to take our word for it--many cars now come with a trial subscription so you can see what we mean for yourself.

Rear Seat Video Entertainment System

While we originally thought our kid really didn't need to spend more time watching his favorite DVDs, we changed our tune when we discovered how quiet it kept him on long drives.  Extra points for systems that allow you to receive live satellite TV broadcasts.

Don't Bothers

Rain-Sensing Wipers

While these wipers that automatically turn on as the first drops of rain hit the windshield are kind of cool, how hard is it to turn them on the old-fashioned way?

Auto-Dimming Rearview Mirror

Again, if it's too much effort to reach up and switch your rearview mirror from "day" to "night" mode manually, maybe you should avoid driving after dark altogether.

Six-disc CD Changer

Once a must-have, this audio system feature seems rather quaint in an era where you can simply plug your iPod into an auxiliary audio input jack (standard on virtually all new models) and listen to literally thousands of songs.

Blind Zone Warning Systems

Not sure why anyone would spring for this new high-tech gizmo when you can (and should) just turn your head to check your blind spots before changing lanes.

Automatic Parallel-Parking Systems

While these robotic systems have a high gee-whiz factor, we figure folks who can't parallel park a car probably shouldn't be driving.
