Wheels For Winter

Though we don't like to think about it, the fact that fall officially arrived yesterday means just one thing: Winter can't be far behind.  With that in mind, we've been testing several new SUV and crossover models rugged enough to let you laugh in the face of the worst winter weather.

Topping that list is the new Land Rover LR4.  After driving this midsize luxury SUV both on- an off-road in the Green Mountains of Vermont, we can tell you the LR4 is so much better than the outgoing LR3 model that we can see why the Land Rover folks decided it needed a new name.

For starters, the LR4 gets a new upscale look inside and out.  The restyled seven-passenger interior gets a full makeover featuring noticeably nicer materials, including softer leather upholstery and handsome wood trim.  The formerly boxy exterior has also been transformed with sleek new lines and eye-catching details like the distinctive LEDs in the headlights and taillights.

The changes to the LR4's powertrain and running gear are less visible, but they're just as significant.  A new 375-horsepower, 5.0-liter V-8 engine mated to a new six-speed automatic transmission delivers noticeably improved performance.  Changes to the suspension also give the LR4 a much more refined ride and more confident handling on the pavement.

One thing that has remained unchanged is the LR4's off-road capability.  While Land Rovers have always been among the world's most capable off-roaders, the automaker's Terrain Response system--which allows the driver to select from five preprogrammed settings such as "Grass/Gravel/Snow" and "Mud & Ruts"-- make it possible for drivers to negotiate a wide variety of difficult terrain with the twist of a console-mounted knob.
