Born In The USA

With the July 4th holiday fast approaching, we thought we'd take a minute to do our patriotic duty by shedding some light on the whole "Buy American" movement that's sweeping the nation.

Only problem is, sometimes it can be darn hard to figure out what qualifies as an "American" car.  Does the red-white-and-blue-blooded Chevrolet Silverado pass the "Born In The USA" test even though it's actually built in Canada?  What about the BMW X5 and X6 SUVs that are bolted together by hard-working Americans in Spartanburg, South Carolina?  And, just to make things interesting, how do you categorize the Honda CR-V compact crossover, which is assembled in both Ohio and Mexico using a U.S.-built engine and a Japan-sourced transmission?

A recent story in the New York Times helped shed some light on this subject but, frankly, it raised as many questions as it answered.  Still, we think the accompanying interactive guide is worth a look if only to give you something to talk about at your flag-waving weekend barbecue.

In the meantime, check out a few more of our favorite "Born In The USA" models in these DriverTV "virtual showroom experiences":

 Chevrolet Corvette

Dodge Caliber

Ford Escape Hybrid

Lincoln MKS
