Chrysler's Comeback?

I wrote last week about the irony of General Motors' decision to drop the Pontiac brand just when it was offering some of its best cars in recent memory.  Now a similar story with a different outcome.

Chrysler's recent announcement that it has reached agreements with the United Auto Workers union and Italian automaker Fiat means the smallest of America's "Big Three" car companies will likely live to fight another day, even if it's forced to seek Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.  And I, for one, am glad.

My relief at hearing this news isn't just another case of misguided "Buy American" drum-banging.  In fact, I'll be the first to admit that Chrysler has made some truly uninspiring cars and trucks in the past few decades.  But the last couple of years have also seen them introduce some of the best new models in the company's history, including the Chrysler Town & Country minivan, Dodge Challenger coupe, and Dodge Ram MegaCab.  I also recently spent time behind the wheel of a new Dodge Journey SUV and, between its 5-star crash ratings and countless innovative features like a built-in glovebox beverage cooler and dual under-floor storage compartments, I honestly think it's one of the better family vehicles on the market.

Most experts agree Chrysler is unlikely to go out of business anytime soon.  But if the bankruptcy talk is all that stands between you and buying a Chrysler, Dodge, or Jeep vehicle, you might take a minute to read up on the federal government's plan to back up the manufacturer's warranty.

Add some great factory finance and cash-back offers, and now might be the best time in recent memory to park a Chrysler product in your driveway.
